Abstract


This chapter reviews technological options to manage effluents and emissions in the oil and gas industry. Pieces of evidence from various studies relevant to the objectives of the study were drawn from two database citations. Three technological options are identified with 18 categories. Due to its ability to remove contaminants such as aromatic compounds and hydrocarbons present in petroleum refining that biodegrade easily, biological options seem most suitable for effluent treatment. On the other hand, chemical and physical options are also both used for the treatment of effluents and emissions in the oil and gas industry, but do not remove aromatic compounds and hydrocarbons as do biological agents. Only two papers reported on Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
